About Sam...

Who am I?

"Sam is an Electrical Engineering Higher Apprentice. Her employer supports her to attend university, studying for a degree whilst she is working as an electrical engineer. She wanted to work in the real world and to study for a degree, but she did not want any debt. The apprenticeship gives her this opportunity – she gets paid to learn!Sam is friendly and practical which are useful skills as she works with a team of engineers and needs to solve practical problems – she certainly fits the ‘Investigator’ type. "

What do I do?

"As an Electrical Engineering Higher Apprentice, Sam designs and draws electrical and mechanical drawings for generators and power solutions for installations all over the world. People everywhere in the world need power and energy, as well as ways to store energy. Sam has worked in the Panel Wire department, building generators and power systems and in the Test department where she worked on live equipment; testing, repairing and modifying products! Sam has the opportunity to test and commission equipment and to look at whether new product ranges are a good idea. As well as attending university, Sam works for Dale Power Solutions in Scarborough, in an office with a team of engineers. She could choose to travel across the UK and the world, but at present she is happy working from the Scarborough office. As an apprentice she gets paid to train and gets a degree whilst working. Electrical engineers can start on salaries from £20,000 and earn up to £60,000 per year when experienced. "

How did I get here?

"When she was little, Sam wanted to be a fashion designer and then a Maths teacher! She has had lots of support and encouragement from her mum and dad, and from teachers. People like Guy Martin and Suzi Perry also inspired her. Sam left school after taking A-Levels in Maths, Physics and Geography. She then applied for a higher apprenticeship with Dale Power solutions. They were confident about her and offered her the role before she even got her exam results! She now has 4 years to learn as much as she can from the experts at Dale.Sam did not know what she really wanted to do until she started work. She liked trying out the different departments as part of her apprenticeship which helped her realise what she had a passion for.Sam’s employer supported her to apply for university, and she is now studying for her degree. Sam’s employer pays all her university fees and she is looking forward to being a fully qualified Electrical Engineer. "

The life I live

"When she is not at work, Sam enjoys sewing, baking, walking her dogs, reading and going on holiday! Sam enjoys her work and particularly likes the people she works with and the variety of things that she does each day as part of her role. Sam says that in the future she sees herself as a fully qualified and competent engineer who is happy and successful in that role. "
