About Dawn...

Who am I?

"Dawn works for a scientific recruitment company, supporting clients to grow their businesses and to find people with the skills they need to help them expand. She loves helping scientists to secure their dream job and helping clients to find the top talent they are looking for.Dawn says her quiz results show her as a ‘Coach’ type which is accurate as she supports and develops her clients and is naturally good at creating relationships and listening. As a ‘Campaigner’ type, Dawn understands what people want and uses her creativity to generate lots of ideas for them. She is quite resilient too – in recruitment people often say ‘No’ and you have to find another way."

What do I do?

"Dawn helps companies to look at how they can grow their business, and she helps scientists to find new and exciting roles to match their skills. The clients need to trust her skills and expertise to decide how they will grow their business and who they need to help them to do this. She spends a lot of time on the phone matching potential employees she has sourced with the companies who need them.Dawn may be working with a large global company to identify their skills needs over a period of time, or with a small enterprise, or supporting a scientist to find a new role by helping them with applications and interview techniques. She finds it very satisfying to match a person with a role and find that they have got the job. Science is developing all the time and it means that Dawn must keep her knowledge up to date and she learns a great deal from clients and candidates alike. Dawn works from an office base but travels to exhibitions and client sites across the UK. Business advisers earn between £20,000 to £35,000 per year."

How did I get here?

"Dawn always wanted to work in science, having been inspired by her teachers. She really wanted to be part of the safety testing of products in the environment. Dawn took her Biology degree part time, over 6 years, whilst working part-time as a laboratory technician at a university. She was really pleased as her employer, the University of Leeds, sponsored her to do her degree and she had no debt. Dawn gained a lot of scientific skills from her technician role and her degree. She then worked in regulating scientific studies and realised that science is regulated in all sorts of areas – medicines, personal care products, crop protection, and household cleaning products. She then worked in Business Development, and gained new skills there. She realised that she really enjoyed helping people to find jobs that make the most of their science skills and passions. When she was unfortunately made redundant, Dawn decided that she wanted to work for Network Scientific. She was very persistent and it paid off – she really loves her job!"

The life I live

"When Dawn is not working she likes crafting and taught herself to crochet from YouTube videos. She likes to swim and has a personal trainer. She has also been a Brownie Leader and does martial arts. What a combination!Growing up, Dawn wanted to work outdoors. She has worked in farming where she completed a tractor maintenance course, and helped with lambing, which she says was fantastic. She never thought she would end up working in scientific recruitment!Dawn enjoys all areas of science and finding out about new things happening in science. Dawn has not planned her career, she likes to make the most of opportunities. She sees her future in science and recruitment and would like to promote science in schools. "
