About Louise...
Who am I?
"As a Senior Development Manager, I am is responsible for understanding the current and future demands of the railway network and developing solutions to potential challenges. I am the ‘Explorer’, ‘Quality Controller’ and ‘Influencer’ types. The ‘Quality Controller’ type shows in my job where I am thorough and methodical in ensuring I know all the available information to make the right decisions for the railway. As an ‘Influencer’, I must follow set regulations and standards in all my work, to ensure the public can use the railway infrastructure safely. I am collaborative and conscientious person which is good because I have to work with multiple teams in developing solutions. My role in checking and resolving issues in projects is typical of an ‘Explorer’ type."
What do I do?
"As a Senior Development Manager, I am responsible for understanding the current and future demands of the railway network and developing solutions to potential challenges. I work with multiple teams and people in the railway from engineers and designers to analysts and modellers, to be able to work out what the railway of the future needs to look like and run like. I use my engineering skills and experience in all aspects of the projects I work on, in challenging the project development works, and ensuring the right decisions are being made, as well as being able to articulate the project aspirations to a wide and varying audience."
How did I get here?
"I knew engineering was the career for her from a young age. I took part in a 6th Form engineering project and from this applied for a Year in Industry with Mott MacDonald. This proved civil engineering was the direction I wanted to go in and that is what I studied at university. I also carried out summer placements and worked on a variety of projects, including one for Network Rail. I really enjoyed the variety of work offered by the railway, and after graduating, she joined Mott MacDonald as a graduate civil engineer with a starting salary of about £20,000. After a couple of years, I moved to Network Rail as an Assistant Asset Engineer, and then to the role of Asset Engineer, before moving into Development."
The life I live
"I really enjoy gardening and growing my own vegetables, as well as hiking and walking.I am a bit of a dare-devil, having recently gotten into climbing and having flown both a glider and an aeroplane solo!In the future, I hope to stay within the world of engineering, whether it be as a practicing engineer or growing my passion for STEM engagement and inspiring future generations of engineers."
My typical day
"I never know what each day will bring! Most of the time is spent in an office environment but site visits and stakeholder meetings are also an important element of the work and get me out and about. I could find myself talking to the project team and making key decisions on the project, or having to talk to government officials to try and secure funding for projects, or taking part in consultation talking to members of the public to understand what they want and need."
My qualifications
"Degree in Civil Engineering "
