Aimee McDonnell
People tried to stop me doing engineering, they didn’t understand what it was. If you want to do it, stay strong, work hard and do it all with a smile.
About Aimee...
Who am I?
"Aimee is friendly and outgoing. She likes numbers and people, so engineering is a good career for her. As an apprentice she needs to be well-organised as she needs to balance work and study, with her personal life. Her ‘Manager’ type is really useful for this. Aimee’s ‘Innovator’ type shows in her decision to take up a Higher Apprenticeship so that she could get her degree and work experience, and not have any student debt."
What do I do?
"Aimee is a Higher Engineering Apprentice working for a British multinational defence, security and aerospace company. She works four days a week and is paid to go to college one day a week for four years until she is fully qualified. Every 4 months she tries out a new role in ship-building engineering. She currently works in logistics support for a new ship.Aimee works on many different projects with a lot of brilliant engineers. She is amazed at the wide range of things she gets to do. Every day she learns new things from the team that she works with, and she has the opportunity to share her own ideas too. Mechanical engineers can earn from £22,000 to £55,000 per year."
How did I get here?
"Aimee did A-Levels in Maths, Physics and Product Design. She attended several STEM events and met some employers who offered her the chance to get her degree without any fees by doing an apprenticeship. After several applications she was accepted at BAE systems.Aimee is on a four-year Higher Apprenticeship scheme. This allowed her to study for her Higher National Certificate in Engineering which her employer paid for, as well as paying her salary. She started on £17,500 and could earn up to £60,000 when fully qualified! She is now studying for her Higher National Diploma, also funded by her employer. Alongside this, she is doing some practical engineering qualifications. "
The life I live
"In Aimee’s spare time she loves reading detective and crime novels. She likes to spend time with her family and friends, walking the dogs and catching up. She also enjoys eating out and likes to find interesting restaurants. Aimee is looking forward to her future. In her job, she meets many hard-working, brilliant and inspirational engineers who continue to inspire her. When her apprenticeship is complete she hopes to be offered a position with the opportunity to do her degree and even her master’s. "
