About Suchismita...
Who am I?
"All 3 - Communicator , Coordinator and Trainer match well with me. In my job role, I have to understand what customers need. Then I have to design a project so that we can deliver the solution to them . When we carry out the project, I have to co-ordinate all the activities. Then I have always loved to train / coach my colleagues on aspects of Chemical (or Process) engineering."
What do I do?
"I am working with Recycling Technologies who is trying to find a way to convert plastic packaging back to the oil from which they are made. This should help reduce plastic pollution and save the oceans. I work with the scientists who carry out the research in the laboratory and take their learnings and convey it to engineers so that they can build larger machines. This is the job of Process Development. I love that I get to solve new challenges each day and at the same time find a solution to saving the environment from misuse of plastics. "
How did I get here?
"My roles have changed throughout my career spanning 20 years so far. When I started my career I was looking at design of chemical processes (to reduce air pollution) the starting salary for this kind of job is around £20,000-25,000 per year. Over years I have taken up roles dealing with working in manufacturing factories to improve the way they deliver their products. I have worked with consultant whose job is to go to various factories and try to help these customers make their products in a better efficient way."
The life I live
"I love to write poetry. I like to explain chemistry. My husband and I have raised 2 children with the help of their grandparents. We have travelled to many places but we love the beaches of Goa, India."
My typical day
"There is no typical day- sometimes I will be indoor working at the computer. Other days I could be at the site - outdoors climbing 20 flights of stairs in a cement plant or gathering operating data at a plastic recycling factory. I have had the opportunity to travel all around India, visited China, Phlillipines, US , Dubai and Canada for work."
My qualifications
"I grew up in India, so I did my A-Levels equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, then I went to University (Institute of Chemical technology, Mumbai) to get Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering which is a 4 year course in India. I went on to to my doctoral studies in the US to receive a PhD in Environmental Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey, USA. "
