About Eleanor...

Who am I?

"I am a meticulous worker that can work on the finer detail without losing sight of the bigger picture. I am comfortable working with and leading a team however I am also very comfortable working on projects individually. I have great organisational and time management skills that have allowed me to balance a full time job with being a member of the Olympic archery squad. In order to balance my two careers I have to plan my weeks and use prioritization skills to ensure I maximize every opportunity. The three personality types I matched with are Developer, Influencer and Quality Controller. The Developer personality fits me as I am someone who likes to improve the world around me using my problem solving and creative mindset. In my work I am using my materials knowledge and my inquisitive mind to develop new projects such as safety gloves to protect operators from radiation. I love trying to find a solution to a problem that will potentially save the lives of others! The Influencer personality suits me as I take the time to explain situations to others especially in a team situation. Currently at my work I am taking on a leadership role and working virtually I am the glue in the team ensuring every member understands what has been achieved and what is needed for the next step. The Quality Controller personality suits me as I have a natural ability to prioritise, understand the risk and come up with the best solutions possible. I am a proactive person who has a strong moral compass which results in my team having full trust in me. I ensure that my team feel that they can come to me with any issues and I listen to their needs.I am a positive person and I don't allow others to tell me I can't achieve anything!"

What do I do?

"I have just graduated from the University of Birmingham studying Materials Science and Technology. I have started a graduate scheme called nucleargraduates and I am sponsored by Sellafield. I spend my first 9 months working at Sellafield before doing two further placements (globally) to gain experience before returning to work for Sellafield. Currently at Sellafield I am working in the Beta/Gamma Technical team within the Remediation work force.I am working on a project to improve the needlestick resistance of gloves used by operators when handling radioactive samples. This requires using skills I learnt at university to complete testing on commercial gloves to see whether I can find any with improved needlestick resistance whilst not impacting the dexterity of the gloves. This project is really interesting as the two properties required (puncture resistance and dexterity) are opposing properties and therefore I am required to find the right balance that protects our operators whilst allowing them to complete their jobs correctly!"

How did I get here?

"I studied Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Product Design at A-level before studying Materials Science and Technology at the University of Birmingham. I really enjoyed the practical and applied side of my A-level subjects and after completing a lot of research I discovered Materials Science. I completed two MOOCS (massive open online courses) through coursera which confirmed my love for Materials Science. After completing university I wanted to work in a growing industry where I could continue to apply my knowledge of materials in a way that has a real life impact.I would advise any student of any age that if you find something that interests you then look to see if you can complete an online course a few hours a week to grow your interest!"

The life I live

"I am a member of the GB Olympic Archery Squad and have been representing Great Britain internationally since 2015. I have several international medals including winning Team Silver at a World Cup in 2018 which is the first Woman's Archery Team medal in over 11 years! Never let anyone tell you that you can't be great in more than one thing! If there is a will then there is a way!"

My typical day

"Due to COVID-19 I am working virtually however my work day starts with replying to emails. I then spend time working on my project which includes things like:- Talking to suppliers- Having work calls to update my team- Planning testing protocols and timetables- Research options to improve glove designs"

My qualifications

"A-levels: Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Product Design.Degree: 1st Class Degree with Honours BEng Materials Science and Technology from University of Birmingham."
