About Hannah...
Who am I?
"I think overall, my 3 personality types match me quite well. COACHAlthough my daily job consists of number crunching and working with IT, I do have to be creative. Hyperion is a niche finance system which works differently for each organisation that uses it, so trying to Google Hyperion solutions when something isn't working doesn't always give you the answer you need. To get around problems with Hyperion, you need to think creatively and out of the box, building on past experiences and exploring different ideas to try to fix the issue. I also have to work with a wide range of people in the finance department to understand their needs when they are trying to build financial reports using Hyperion. I actually really enjoy puzzles and riddles, so when issues arise in Hyperion, they are like a puzzle that needs to be solved.COORDINATORI enjoy being organised and punctual, and update my weekly to-do list whenever new tasks have been assigned to me or they have been completed. Being organised really helps with my workload, especially when work is busy and I have numerous deadlines to meet. Working in the Hyperion team, I deliver a service (Hyperion) so that finance employees can use it effectively to input numbers, pull out reports. This also means I help people with Hyperion when required.TRAINERThe financial data I see on a daily basis and the coding behind Hyperion can look quite complex. But once you get familiarised with how finance and Hyperion work, and break down that information into bite-sized logical pieces, you can get a good understanding of what's going on without needing to be a finance/Hyperion expert."
What do I do?
"In a nutshell, I help finance users build and extract financial reports from Hyperion and I maintain and develop our financial models that are held within Hyperion. It is the financial models in which the financial reports can be built and extracted from. I really enjoy the problem solving aspect of my job, as when we have data issues with Hyperion it's like trying to solve a puzzle and it's a really satisfying feeling when you solve it and help a colleague by doing so. A lot of Hyperion remedies and learning come from on the job experience (rather than referring to Google or textbooks) so I do think you need to enjoy problem solving and thinking outside the box for this job. The starting salary for my role is £26,000."
How did I get here?
"I studied IT Management for Business at the University of Manchester, which is a mixture of business and IT modules with lots of group projects. During my 2nd year at university, I realised the importance of work experience so I applied for several summer internships on my university's career website, one of which was at Arqiva as a procurement intern. I secured the role and spent 6 weeks interning at Arqiva. I enjoyed working at Arqiva and got on with my team really well. When I was back at university for my 3rd year, I got a call from the internship agency asking me if I'd like to come back to Arqiva to do another summer internship with the procurement team again. I jumped at the opportunity and my internship was a bit longer than the previous year, I think it was 10 weeks in total. Whilst at Arqiva, the procurement team and internal recruitment team helped me to find a permanent position at Arqiva, which was in the Hyperion team as a Hyperion Support. I was also able to transfer onto the graduate scheme so I could participate in training alongside the other graduates.I think internships are an excellent way to help you network and find a graduate role after university, so I would really recommend them. Especially considering how competitive graduate schemes are, internships can be an alternative route to help you find a career once you've graduated from university."
The life I live
"I love spending time with my kitten, my boyfriend and my family and friends. I also enjoy long countryside walks and playing competitively on MMO games on my PC."
My typical day
"My typical work day is not much different to how it was pre Covid-19, as all of my work is laptop-based. In the mornings, the first thing I will do is read and reply to my emails and read any Teams messages and announcements I have missed. Then I will consult my weekly plan, prioritising work that is higher priority before moving onto lower priority work. My weekly plan is updated with new tasks as I receive them, which helps organise my workload and also means I don't forget to do anything.Typically, my role responsibilities include:- Loading financial data into our Hyperion database. - Helping finance employees build reports and extract financial data using Hyperion.- Maintain user security e.g. managing the data different people can access in Hyperion.- Preparing the Hyperion models for our budget and forecast cycles, so finance employees can enter data into Hyperion.- Maintain the Hyperion models e.g. editing the structure of the database, streamlining the models so they load data quicker."
My qualifications
"A Levels - I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at university, let alone a career, so I chose A level subjects that I had an interest in (Biology, Chemistry and Classics). At university, my degree was in IT Management for Business (ITMB). It did not require any specific A levels but it did require at least AAB or above in A level grades. I chose ITMB because I have an interest in IT and it seemed like a practical degree which I could see myself using in the workplace."
