About Jessica...

Who am I?

"My job requires a lot of attention to detail and problem solving, which matches well with the 'Quality Controller' result. I also need to be able to explain very complicated matters in a simple way, which matches the 'Influencer' result. I manage people in my role and like to see them succeed, which is reflected in the 'Coach' result."

What do I do?

"I am a UK and European Patent Attorney. While this is in the legal field, you need have a science degree to be eligible to join the profession. We work with companies and inventors to protect inventions. We need to be able to understand the science of the invention as well as the legal requirements and the case law, to get them the best protection for their invention that we can. The outcome of my work is a granted patent, which gives the owner a 20 year monopoly on the claimed invention.I enjoy the fact that it is intellectually challenging. I am constantly exposed to new scientific developments and it is enjoyable when you think of a way to get around an objection - it can be like solving a puzzle. It is a good mix between science and written argument, so it's good for anyone who likes a debate."

How did I get here?

"My dad was a patent attorney and it always sounded really interesting. After taking a mixture of A Levels (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, History & German) I went to university to study for an MChem in Chemistry. The company I worked for then paid for my UK & European Patent exams."

The life I live

"I like to exercise - I have played a lot of hockey at the weekends while working and I cycle to work almost every day. I am getting more into cycling and aiming to do longer distances. I also like spending time with my family and friends, watching the latest show out on Netflix and reading."

My typical day

"A typical day at work involves reviewing documents that are challenge a client's invention and writing letters to the client to explain what the situation is. I also write letters to the Patent Office to argue why my client's invention is sufficiently different to what is already out there. I also attend oral hearings at the European Patent Office and argue for my client's invention in person."

"A Level Maths (Grade A), A Level Further Maths (Grade A), A Level Chemistry (Grade A), A Level History (Grade A), AS Level German (Grade A).MChem in Chemistry.UK and European Patent exams"
