About Sally...

Who am I?

"Sally is responsible for looking after a team of engineers, designing new sewage treatment works and upgrading old ones. She is a friendly, empathetic and considerate individual, which are all characteristics that are really helpful when having to look after a team of engineers! Sally is conscientious and logical, she has to drive projects forward and work through each problem at work in a logical fashion. Being a project manager, it is essential that Sally is both a good ‘Communicator’ and ‘Coach’ to ensure that she understands the needs of the team and those around her. As a manager, it is essential that Sally invests time to help others progress their careers and this fits with her ‘Trainer’ type. "

What do I do?

"As an Associate Director in Civil Engineering, Sally is responsible for looking after a team of engineers, helping them to design and build new sewage treatment works or upgrade existing treatment works. Without efficient sewerage systems in this country, there would be severe health problems for the public.Sally coordinates the smooth running of projects. She ensures that each design is what the client expects, and that teams work with contractor partners to make sure delivery is on time and to budget. The most exciting part of Sally’s job is seeing a project, that was originally just a plan on the computer, finally being finished. She works from an office but also gets to go on site and see the work as it progresses. Sally finds Civil Engineering extremely rewarding, especially as it can be used for such wide-reaching benefits for everyone. Sally loves her current role as she knows she can progress whilst also helping others reaching their full potential. Civil engineers can earn from £24,000 after graduating up to £80,000 when experienced."

How did I get here?

"Growing up, Sally was always surrounded by engineers and scientists – her father was a Professor in Civil Engineering. This was probably the reason that Sally studied Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A-Level, before doing a degree in Civil Engineering. Although she didn’t study Physics at A-Level and found Maths to be her weakest subject, Sally believes that Civil Engineering is more about logical processes than mathematical ability, so you should not let this put you off. After university, Sally worked in a few different roles before taking on her current role as an Engineering Consultant. She has completed an MPhil in Civil Engineering, and gained professional chartership as a Chartered Civil Engineer. Sally was particularly proud of being named Young Woman Engineer of the Year in 2009 by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET)."

The life I live

"In Sally’s spare time she loves being outside, doing activities such as walking running and mountain biking. Sally also loves renovating her house and making cakes. She is proud to be known as an engineering geek who loves Star Wars and Lego! "
